Photographs by Kensuke Kazama.
Jyurousya, Sapporo, 2005. 200 pp., black-and-white illustrations throughout, 8¾x12".

The subject of Kensuke Kazama's beautiful Yubari is Hokkaido Prefecture's coal mining industry, which is responsible for nearly twenty percent of Japan's total electrical power. But despite the implications of such a massive contribution to the country's infrastructure, the legacy of coal mining is largely ignored or forgotten. Kensuke brings our attention to both the past and present legacy of coal mining, and aestheticizes the distinctive landscape created by the industry. All texts, including an afterword by Kazama and essays by several Japanese critics, are reproduced in both English and Japanese. These copies have also been signed, likewise in both languages.
