Herbert List.
Junge Männer.

Photographs by Herbert List. Introduction by Sir Stephen Spender.
Twin Palms Publishers, Altadena, CA, 1988. 112 pp., 78 gravure plates,, 11¼x14¼".

Beginning in 1929, Herbert List photographed the young men he knew and traveled with throughout Greece, Italy and Germany, capturing their physical beauty and athletic prowess. List, a German Jewish homosexual, soon came under the suspicion of the Nazis. Nevertheless, List chose not to destroy the photographs of the men he loved, and kept them hidden beneath his bed in a box. Included in this portfolio is a selection of those early works, which recreate for the viewer a sense of time and place lost forever in the maelstrom of war. Read Publisher's Description.
