1000 Families.

Text and photographs by Uwe Ommer.
Taschen, New York, 2000. 576 pp., 971 color illustrations, 8x10".

This photographer's overwhelming and exhaustive project, of photographing 1000 families from around the world was recently completed and was subsequently endorsed by UNICEF. By removing any superfluous props, and using the same light and white backdrop for each portrait, Ommer has, in effect, made the world a bit smaller. These smiling faces remind us that we are all one family, rich in diversity, yet united by our very humanity. A compelling resource that should be in every home and every library!
