Catherine Opie.

Photographs by Catherine Opie. Text by Russel Ferguson and Kate Bush.
2000. 56 pp., 12 duotone and 24 color illustrations, 8½x12".

At first glance, the work in this volume is 180 degrees from the platinum print 'Freeways' series that Opie is most-known for. Opie presents work from her lesser-known 'Mini-malls' series as well as portraits of members of an S&M community in San Francisco. This last body of work, large format full-color portraits (and some self-portraits) with richly colored backdrops are the most surprising of her newest work, but what emerges is her innate search for the meaning of community, a search which holds these disparate images together as an coherent autobiographical journey.
